The tournament at Tahuna Park was the first nines event to invite teams from outside the city, and to include women's sides.
Organiser Dave Reedy said the plan was to make the most of interest in the recent NRL Auckland Nines, and that plan appeared to work.
The event also served as a prelude to the Dunedin league season, with new team East Coast Eagles turning out for the first time.
The men's tournament saw the Eagles, University, South Pacific Raiders, Timaru Warriors, Ashburton Barbarians and Kia Toa Tigers compete for the trophy.
University and the Raiders fought out the final, with the students winning a tight game 12-4.
Dunedin teams Pirates and GTH were joined by Ashburton-Canterbury in the women's competition, with the final played between Pirates and Ashburton-Canterbury. Pirates won 38-0.
