The temperature had reached 29degC when the team's ''advance party'' made an attempt to conquer the steepest street in the world.
Manu Vatuvei, Ben Henry, Thomas Leuluai and Dane Nielsen are nursing injuries and walked only halfway up Baldwin St. But they still wanted to get to the top, so they hopped into their car and drove to the top and back.
''It was pretty tough,'' admitted Vatuvei, who is nursing a quadriceps injury.
''It was on my bucket list and I ticked it off today.''
It was the third time Leuluai had climbed up Baldwin St.
''I ran up here with my old man when I came to Dunedin on holiday when I was 16,'' he said.
Leuluai was aged 5 when he first climbed up Baldwin St with his father, James.
''Dad carried me the whole way, so it was pretty easy for me,'' he said.
Of the four, arguably Vatuvei will be the player the fans will miss the most when the Warriors play the Brisbane Broncos at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Sunday.
''It's just precautionary,'' Vatuvei said of his injury.
''I want to get it right for round one of the NRL against Parramatta in Sydney in two weeks. It's not 100% so there was no sense in pushing it for the trial.''
Vatuvei (27) made his debut for the Warriors against the South Sydney Rabbitohs in 2004. He has played 171 games over 11 seasons.
''It's exciting. Time's gone quick. It's just flown.
''Hopefully I can have an injury-free season and give the 200 games a fairly good nudge.''
He has scored a record 118 tries for the Warriors and has his eye on 150 tries.
''Anything is possible, mate,'' he said.
''I'll just take it week by week.''
It was a busy day in Dunedin for Vatuvei and his fellow Warriors. They visited Cadbury's chocolate factory and the University of Otago, and had a signing session at the Golden Centre Mall.
The chocolate at Cadbury's looked tempting but the Warriors could not eat any of it.
''We are on a strict diet and weren't allowed to have any chocolate,'' Vatuvei said.
The rest of the Warriors trained in Queenstown and will arrive in Dunedin later today.
