The Kia Toa Tigers' dominant 48-18 win over the South Pacific Raiders at Kensington Oval on Saturday puts them on top of the ORL competition.

Early signs looked good for the Raiders, as strong defence contained the Tigers attack, but after several sets defending their line they eventually allowed the Tigers to secure their first points.

From then on, the Raiders gave away too much possession and missed many tackles.

Tigers captain Vila Apuula and his halves partner Taua Piri combined well, co-ordinating the edges on attack and creating countless opportunities to score points.

Scoring points is exactly what lock Hagan Free did, racking up three tries in yet another impressive performance.

Prop Nolan Ratu was awarded man of the match for his immense efforts in the middle of the field, taking strong carries and providing solid defence to ensure the Tigers won the battle of the forward packs.

The Raiders rallied around captain Manassah Kutia in the second half to show the determination expected of the side. Centre Chris Talauta had a strong defensive showing, making some solid tackles, and fellow centre Willie Time provided plenty of momentum on attack. Steven Campbell-Paniona backed that up with some strong carries at prop.

Ultimately, the Tigers were too good and walked away deserved winners, after a dominant performance.

The East Coast Eagles notched up a win against University, edging the students 36-32.

Momentum shifted several times throughout the contest, and both sides had the lead for periods of time before conceding points. University came out strong and fullback Finn Langdale scored two tries in the first 10 minutes.

The Eagles struck back with two tries of their own in quick succession, leaving the students searching for answers to their defensive woes. The rest of the first half continued in the same vein, with points being exchanged regularly.

The stage was set in the second half for either side to step up, and when Eagles hooker Hyrum Martin scored just minutes in, it looked as if the Eagles were going to do just that.

However, in keeping with the tone of the match, University returned the favour when captain Ricki Allan scored a try by running a line off hooker James Devoe and pushing through defenders. Second rower Jong Hoon Lee seemingly busted tackles at will, as shown when he scored his second try of the match to add to University's hopes.

From there, the contest became lively but the Eagles controlled the outcome by maintaining possession in the dying stages. Captain Kieran Fitzgerald directed his side, ensuring it completed sets late in the half to keep University on the back foot.

Prop William Jackson sealed University's fate when he burst through the defence with a strong carry, to score his second try with just minutes left in the game.
