Tander clocked 1min 23.0349sec to break the qualifying record he set yesterday for the Hamilton 400's 3.4km street circuit.

In doing so, he reversed the positions at the front of the grid by pushing Team Vodafone's Jamie Whincup into second spot.

Whincup, the defending V8 Supercar series champion and present points leader, had been on target to go under 1:23 in his Holden late in the session, but was hampered by traffic near the end.

Whincup and Tander dominated yesterday's 59-lap race, finishing one-two.

There was again little for home fans to cheer about after yesterday's disappointments, with no New Zealander in the top 10 of qualifying this morning.

The best of the New Zealand contingent was Shane Van Gisbergen, who will start 12th on the grid in his Ford.

Only two others were in the top 20 - Holden drivers Greg Murphy at 18th and Fabian Coulthard 19th.
