Waikato Bay of Plenty coach Noeline Taurua is scouring her black book in search of suitable replacement players ahead of this weekend's last-chance trans-Tasman netball league semifinal against the Adelaide Thunderbirds.

Magic were beaten 58-43 by the Melbourne Vixens in Sunday's major semifinal and returned home with at least one player, Halana Leith, unavailable and another, Frances Solia, in doubt because of a calf injury.

Regular midcourter Solia did not play against the Vixens, with Taurua throwing unprepared young shooter Jess Tuki into the crucial wing attack slot.

An ineffective Tuki was replaced in the third quarter by Leith who then injured her knee in the final quarter, ending her season.

Doubts over Solia's availability for the Thunderbirds encounter in Hamilton on Sunday had left the Magic's roster looking a bit thin, Taurua said.

"I've got people in my mind, but we have to check things out with them."

Former Silver Fern Jenny May Coffin was not an option because she did not have the required fitness.

"If we can't find anyone suitable, then we have to make do with what we have got," she told The New Zealand Herald.

The Magic need special dispensation to bring in a replacement player during the finals.

The rules say a finals replacement player must have been in the line-up for at least three games during the regular season.

However, Taurua is hoping to take advantage of allowances to bring in a replacement player because of serious injury.

She told Radio Sport this morning any replacement player available would still have to be tried out in training this week to see if they would fit in.
