Southern Magpies are the premier A grade champions for the fifth year in a row after beating Phys Ed A 58-53 at the Edgar Centre in Dunedin last night.

Southern pegged back an early deficit to take the lead and was dominant for the remainder of the game.

While Phys Ed fought to regain its advantage, Southern remained in control and continued to extend the margin.

Phys Ed had a four-goal lead early in the game but Southern levelled the scores minutes later.

The Southern defence secured a rebound which led to a two-goal advantage midway through the quarter.

Phys Ed was patient when passing into its shooters and managed to peg back a four-goal deficit to end the quarter two goals down.

Both teams worked hard to upset each other's attack but Southern capitalised on Phys Ed errors and regained its four-goal advantage.

Shooter Jennifer O'Connell was a constant option under the hoop for Southern.

Phys Ed wing defence Laura Moffatt was tight on defence and did her best to gain possession from her opponent but Southern added another goal to its lead.

Southern made positional changes across the court at halftime which partnered goal attack Sophie Erwood against her twin, Phys Ed goal defence Abby Erwood.

It was tight on defence and made it difficult for Phys Ed to get the ball down court, and midway through the quarter the margin in hand was seven goals.

Despite that, Phys Ed continued to work to get the ball into its shooters.

Southern goal keep Tarryn Dickson was impressive on defence and played a role in her team extending to a 10-goal lead early in the final quarter.

Phys Ed then capitalised on a Southern attacking error and brought the margin back to seven goals.

However, Southern did not relent and restored its 10-goal lead midway through the spell.

Phys Ed shooters Sophie Johns and Ella McCall worked hard against tough Southern defenders and edged the score back to nine.

Phys Ed played well in the final minutes but the best it could do was to reduce the margin against it to five goals.

In other games, College A beat University Albion A 53-41, St Hilda's defeated Taieri Snr A 65-35, and Southern Tui edged University Albion B 64-60 in extra time.
