Tough decision but Peeters off overseas

Former Steel midcourter Stacey Peeters’ career was just starting to take off and now she is taking off — on a plane to England as soon as her visa comes through.

The 24-year-old lost plenty of sleep when she was making the decision.

And watching some of her team-mates make the Silver Ferns made her wonder whether she should stay put and chase her netball dreams instead.

But Peeters caught the travel bug during an overseas stint last year and could not shake it.

"I went to Greece, Rome, London and Croatia as well, and I think I just got a bit of the travel bug, to be honest, and thought ‘I could do so much more of this’," she said.

When Peeters returned from her holiday she had to face the reality of walking away from a burgeoning netball career.

The Steel went unbeaten during the regular season, which did not make leaving any easier.

And then when her team-mates returned from stints with the Silver Ferns, the doubts would resurface.

‘‘I had so many nights in tears where I just didn’t know what I wanted to do.

"I felt like I was leaving my family.

"I thought should I stay one more year and see what the new competition is like. But I just kind of had to make a decision."

Peeters joined the Steel in 2013 and has played 16 games for the franchise.

She is hopeful of securing a playing gig in the Super League but there is "nothing in concrete".

"There might be the opportunity to play, there might not be. I’ll have to wait and see."

Peeters works at the Otago Academy of Sport as a co-ordinator for New Zealand’s Elite Motorsport Academy.

It is the type of job she can do remotely and Peeters plans to continue supporting the latest inductees through until June "so there will be no disruption".
