Otago opening batsman Craig Cumming was almost embarrassed to eclipse Bert Sutcliffe's record haul of 17 centuries for the province.

Cumming finished the 2009-2010 season equal with the great left-hander and surpassed the mark with an undefeated 127 against Canterbury in Queenstown in February this year.

The right-hander celebrated in style, cracking another century in his second innings.

But claiming the record was bittersweet for the former New Zealand opener.

"There were mixed emotions," Cumming said.

"It is quite humbling to have your name mentioned in the same breath as Bert Sutcliffe.

"In some ways, part of me feels that it isn't quite right because he was such a great player and certainly a guy who deserves to be at the top of all the leaderboards".

Cumming, who has scored 22 first-class centuries in total - 20 for Otago, one for Canterbury and one for a Southern Conference side - is on the verge of erasing another of Sutcliffe's provincial records.

He has scored 5951 runs for Otago and needs a further 78 this summer to overtake Sutcliffe's record haul of 6028.

That seems a fait accompli, as does his place in Otago cricket folklore.

Cumming works for Allied Press and hosts a Saturday radio sports show during winter. But he will be back in white when the sun shines again.
