It will be a combination of the codes at Carisbrook on Saturday, as first rugby and then football get their time on the ground.

Carisbrook, for possibly the first time in its long history, will host both rugby and football on the same day - and in January, not July, as the sporting calendar gets turned on its head.

The ground has been the home for the Highlanders since Super rugby's inception in 1996 and this year Otago United has made the ground its home.

On Saturday, both sides will play games on the ground, which will make for a hectic afternoon for assistant turf manager Jimmy Oliver.

The Highlanders will kick off at 2.30pm, taking on the Chiefs in their first pre-season match.

Shortly after that game finishes about 4pm, the rugby goalposts will come down, the oval balls will be put away and the round balls will be in action, as Otago United faces Hawkes Bay at 6pm, in a New Zealand Football Championship match.

Oliver said the rugby goalposts were only half as high as usual so should not be too hard to get down and, with half a dozen helpers, should be relatively straightforward to dismantle.

The football goalposts would then be shifted into position.

He had marked out the football field in light green paint yesterday and straight after the rugby match was over would get out the white paint and go over the green lines to mark out the football ground.

The ground was in good condition with the damp summer giving the grass plenty of growth.

The field had been mowed most days lately.

Tickets cost $5 for the games on Saturday, with children free.

The Highlanders will not be back at Carisbrook until February 19, when they take on the Blues in the second round of the Super 14, while Otago United will play Team Wellington at the ground on January 31.
