Albion made a confident start to the 2009-10 Central Otago cricket season at its home ground in Luggate when it beat Dunstan by five wickets on Saturday.

After having to settle for first use of the ball, Matt Anderson made the most of his chances for Albion, taking four for 17 off his six overs in an impressive spell.

Nick Brooker and Ronnie Kotcamp each took two wickets, as the visiting Dunstan side was dismissed for 99.

James Rabbit provided the only real resistance, scoring 29.

In reply, it took Albion 30 overs to reach the target, Daniel Edwards seeing it through to the end in scoring 28 not out.

Edwards came to the crease at No 5 when it looked as though Albion might struggle to reach the target, and batted well.

Julian Price chipped in with a handy 19.

Alastair Banks was the bowler to stand out for the visiting side, taking three for 13 from his eight overs, but to no avail, Albion reaching 100 for five to win the match.

Anderson and Edwards took the man of the match honours for their respective sidesAlexandra made an impressive start when it beat Cromwell convincingly by 67 runs at Molyneux Park.

Batting first, the home side was eventually bowled out for 164.

Dave Lilley was the top scorer for the match with 52.

Peter Breen played a nice innings, scoring 40, and all-rounder Brendan Domigan made a handy 33.

Mark Knox was the best of the Cromwell bowlers, taking four for 47.

Andy Ritchie aided Knox with two for 30.

Cromwell's reply was shaky, and it was eventually all out for 97 after 29 overs.

Ritchie featured again, as his side's best batsman, scoring 41.

Domigan was the chief destroyer for Alexandra with the ball, taking five for 29.

Carl Hinton also bowled well with an economical two for 16.

Domigan and Ritchie featured as the two standout players for their respective sides with both bat and ball.

Blackstone Hill (formerly Valley and Omakau) and Queenstown contested the other match of the weekend, Queenstown winning a tight match by a nail-biting one wicket.

Batting first, Blackstone Hill managed 139 all out.

Shaun Windle bowled superbly for Queenstown, picking up a five-wicket haul for just 28 runs.

He was aided by Depan Tandel who had three for 31.

In reply, the Queenstown batsmen eventually reached the target but not without a few problems.

Cam Fawkner scored a much-needed 36 and Tandel featured again with 20 not out.

Bowls

The Maniototo pennants competition produced some big winning margins, in particular from Waipiata's Pete Williams, who beat David Andrew 32-13, and Tony Andrews, who beat Naseby's Stuart Hore 25-8.

The closest match was between John Thurlow of Patearoa and Ranfurly's Neville Warhlich, with Thurlow the victor, 29-23.

Other winners were Roger Andrews, Jim Walker, Ray Kearney and Jim Brown.

Wanaka's Friday Progressive tournament continued last week with Ray Newell leading the skips, Colleen Landsborough leading the seconds and David Byers out in front for the leads.

North Otago

Albion gained its first Borton Cup points of the season when it beat Union by two wickets at King George Park on Saturday.

Sent in to bat, Union was dismissed for 135 in the 30th over.

Antony Cromwell top-scored with 29.

Bowling for Albion, Paul O'Dell took four for 23 off his 10 overs while Brad Kernahan and Jamie Ferris took two wickets each.

An unbeaten 63 from Kernahan saw Albion through to 138 for eight, with Phil Crossan taking three for 37 off his 10 overs, while Paul Johnston claimed three for 25 off six overs.

St Kevins College, mainly due to a fine all-round performance from English professional Chris Smith, defeated Valley by 147 runs at Weston.

St Kevins won the toss and batting first made 251 for seven in its 50 overs.

Smith top-scored with 115, Tim O'Malley made 46 and Sean Conlan added 21.

Bowling for Valley, Hamish McKenzie took three for 40 off his 10 overs while Kelvin Mansfield took three for 31 off five overs.

Valley was dismissed for 104 in the 36th over, with Alex Baddock taking three for eight off 3.2 overs before he left the field with an injury, while Smith, off five overs, took three for 14.

Oamaru struggled to a three-wicket win over Waitaki Boys High School at Don Field.

Batting first, Waitaki Boys made 152 dismissed in the 39th over, with Jordan Horrell top-scoring with 27.

Matt Day added 24 and year 10 pupil Lachie Kingan was unbeaten on 25.

Offspinner Paul Selbie took three for 27 off 9.5 overs while David Sewell took two for 22 and Anthony Sewell two for 15.

Oamaru made 153 for seven in the 47th over, with Waitaki Boys conceding 66 extras, 53 of which were wides.

Horrell produced fine figures for the school side, bowling 10 overs, six of them maidens, and he finished with four for nine.

Tennis

Dominance in the mixed doubles gave Waikouaiti a 9-7 win over Weston Rollers in Southern sub association tennis on Saturday.

Rollers won three of the four men's singles but the Waikouaiti women, led by Wendy Ritchie, won all four of their singles.

The men's and women's doubles were shared, but in the mixed doubles, only Rollers Gary Ewing and Lenore Middlemiss could win their game in a 9-4 win over Justin Lobb and Barbara Wilson.

Waimanui beat Oamaru Central, 12-4, with Central's No 1, Tony Read, having a fine 9-1 win over David Robins.

Central's No 4, Dave Roberts, beat Glen Marshall 9-8 in their singles match.

Read and Georgia Scott won their mixed doubles with a 9-5 win over Robins and Nicky Wallace. while Dave and Deb Roberts beat Marshall and Jenna Donaldson 9-1.

Waimanui's dominance in the women's singles and doubles was the major feature of the win.

Waihamers were too strong for Weston Rockers, with Rockers managing only three wins.

Toni Gray beat Nicole McCone in the No 4 women's singles, while she combined with Mary Campbell to beat Nicole Duncan and McCone 9-4 in the women's doubles. Josh Dalziel and Cathy Aitken got a third one back for Rockers, beating Robin Jamieson and Sophia Todd in the number No 1 mixed doubles, 9-8.

South Otago

The opening games in the 2009-10 senior cricket competition were played on Saturday, with batsmen dominating in all three games.

Last season's winner, Milton, began the season in good form with a five-run victory over the newly formed Clinton team.

Milton batted first and scored 186 all out.

Best batting came from Dillon Bungard with 57, Raymond Burleigh 40 and Brendon Sheath 20.

Clinton at one stage was 130 for three wickets, but slumped to be all out for 181.

The best bowling for Milton came from Bungard three for 35, Dillon Mathieson three for 32 and Kane Adams two for 24.

At Kaitangata, the home team, batting first, scored 196 for four wickets at the end of 40 overs.

The highlight of the innings was the 96-run partnership between Jason Young and Blair Benington.

Young was out for 41, while Benington went on to score the first century of the season, 104 not out, which included seven fours and three sixes.

Orry Young was 20 not out.

The best bowling for SOHS came from Liam Mitchell with two for 20, while Scott Sutherland took looked impressive in his eight overs which cost only 20 runs.

SOHS replied with 135 for eight wickets.

Roger Pennell, who hit five fours and one six, was the mainstay of the innings, scoring 75 not out.

Scott Sutherland completed a fine all-round performance by making 16.

Bowling for Kaitangata, Jason Young took two for 14, as did Orry Young.

At Lawrence, the home team batted first and scored 150 for seven wickets.

Best batting came from Bryce Rishworth 39, Wil Young 33, Jimmy Hill and Tony Potter (both 10).

Bowling for Owaka, Quentin Gare, three for 14, and Francis Parker, one for 19, did best.

Owaka in reply scored 151 for five wickets.

Parker batted splendidly for 70, followed by Steve Sanders 36 and Jim Young 13.

Bowling for Lawrence, Sam Wyber took one for 28, Wil Young two for 16 off seven overs, and Mark Paterson one for seven.

Bowls

Town and Country provided the big upset of the weekend when it outclassed Owaka by 12-0 in round three, played on Saturday.

For T and C, Barry Keach, Jim Savage and David Renton all scored two wins each.

Kaka Point and Milton Blue drew 6-all at the Beach.

John Bisset, John Hurst and Graeme Thomas all secured wins.

For Milton Blue, Sandy McNoe, Bill McDonald and Kevin Anderson recorded one win each.

Finegand held out Milton Gold in a close affair 7-5.

For Finegand, Ian Bennett, Jack Harrold and Wally Melvin all scored one win each.

For Milton Gold, Colin Smith and Murray Taylor scored wins.

Milton White showed good form in beating Clinton 9-3.

For Milton, Gerry Wyber, J. Moana and Lindsay Cameron scored wins.

Geoff Hurst scored Clinton's only win.

Finegand maintained its lead after four rounds in the men's mid-week competition.

It held off a challenge from Clinton 23-19.

Kaka Point Orcas showed their true form with a 21-13 win over Stirling to move into second place.

Balclutha White beat Milton Sinners by 28-10, while Owaka scored the biggest win of the round, beating Kaka Point Seals 34-7.
