Planning is well under way for the club’s 150th anniversary celebrations from October 6-8.
There will be a reunion on the Friday evening and a short-course regatta the following day at either the Otago Harbour or the Bayfield inlet, weather depending. That will be followed by a get-together at night celebrating the club’s history.
An exhibition of the club, including photos and club memorabilia, will be held at Toitū Otago Settlers Museum.
President Dean Winton joined the club in 1978 and is looking forward to reminiscing about his heyday.
"It’s catching up with some people you used to row with in the late ’70s, early ’80s," Winton said.
"It’s just an enjoyable sport — there is a lot of pride in the club."
The club previously held celebratory events for its 100th in 1973 and its 125th in 1998.
"There will be quite a few that went to the 100th that’ll be turning up."
Secretary David Jackson joined the club in 2008 and is eager to meeting those who have made the club what it is today.
The club has about 40 members at present and had strong connections with Bayfield, John McGlashan and Trinity College.
It had also been a starting point for many of New Zealand’s top rowers.
Andrew "Herb" Stevenson and Tony Brook started their careers at the club and went on to be part of the New Zealand world champion eight in 1982.
Most recently, Otago has been home to former women’s lightweight double world champion rower Zoe McBride (Trinity) and Eva Hofmans (Bayfield), who won a junior world title in the national quadruple sculls.
More information about the 150th celebrations can be found on the club’s website.
