Snowsports: Top ten finishes in Quebec for Bray, Brown

Wanaka snowboarders Julianne Bray and Kendall Brown both claimed top ten placings at the Canadian World Cup halfpipe competition in Quebec, yesterday.

The event is the fourth on the halfpipe qualifying circuit for next year's Vancouver Winter Olympics in February.

Five members of the New Zealand snowboarding team finished in the top twenty, with Bray's fifth placing and Brown's ninth-place finish the pick of the bunch.

Sixteen-year-old Queenstown-based Ben Stewart was the best performed New Zealand male rider. He finished the men's halfpipe competition in 14th position.

Top NZ male rider James Hamilton crashed out during the halfpipe semifinals, after a promising first run.

Team members are set to return to their northern hemisphere training base in Colorado for the next two weeks, before the final two World Cup circuit events in Spain and Italy.

• New Zealand's top freeskier Jossi Wells claimed third in the slopestyle competition at the final event of the Winter Dew Tour at Tahoe, California, yesterday.

The 18-year-old Wanaka freeskier scored 90.50 points in his slopestyle run, but was beaten by winner Tom Wallisch (United States) and Canadian Alex Godbout.

Wells' younger brother Byron (16) and team-mate Lyndon Sheehan (19) missed out on the halfpipe finals and finished 14th and 15th respectively.

Wells finished the Winter Dew circuit in third equal position, despite missing the second event on the three-stop tour with an injured shoulder.
