Softball: Otago ends season with third placing at S.I. event

Otago's men's team wrapped up its representative season by finishing third at the South Island provincial championships in Christchurch at the weekend.

It finished ahead of Nelson and Southland, but was knocked out in the semifinals after a 7-1 loss to Marlborough.

Canterbury won the final against Marlborough, 4-1, to continue its 20-year stranglehold on the Jefferies Cup.

Otago's Matt Watts was named in the tournament team alongside Otago pick-up players Ryan Merriman and Matt Holmes, who are from Christchurch but missed out on the Canterbury side.

Otago's under-17 boys team finished fifth in pursuit of the Mainland Shield, but Otago Softball manager Michael Coutts said the experience provided a ‘‘wealth of experience'' ahead of the national tournament in Christchurch next month.

The team includes a raft of players who will be eligible to play in the under-17 age group for a few years, which Coutts said boded well for the future.

Otago's under-17 girls team finished last in its three-team tournament, but there was good news for one player.

Heaven Samson-Loffley was named in the Mainland tournament team, which is to compete in Australia next year.
