Swimming: Four Otago records for Godfrey

Kate Godfrey shattered four Otago open records at the national short course championships in Auckland last week.

The championships, which attracted more than 650 swimmers from across the country, wrapped up on Saturday after five days of competition.

Godfrey (21) knocked 1.41sec off her three year old 200m backstroke record, winning gold in the women's final in 2min 8.75sec.

She broke Oamaru swimmer Isobel Ryan's 50m backstroke record by 0.21sec, winning the women's 19 years and over race in Saturday morning's session in 28.68sec.

Godfrey was slightly slower in the women's race that night, which included the 10 fastest swimmers from all age groups.

Impressive 15 year old Aucklander Gabrielle Fa'amausili set a national record in the final, touching the wall in 27.27sec. Godfrey was third in 28.71sec.

However, Godfrey also broke her own records in the 200m freestyle and 100m backstroke. She clocked 1min 58.84sec on her way to fifth in the women's 200m final, 1.19sec faster than her 2013 record.

After finishing third in the 19 and over 100m backstroke race, Godfrey finished fifth in the women's final. Her 1min 0.43sec time knocked 0.49sec off her old record.

She was not the only Otago swimmer to break regional records. Courtland Ellis (15) broke four age group records, including his own in the 14 15 years 100m freestyle and 100m individual medley.

The Neptune swimmer, who won two gold, three silver and two bronze medals in Auckland, knocked 0.09sec off Andrew Trembath's 2012 50m freestyle, finishing in 24.42sec.

He shaved 0.19sec from his old 100m freestyle record (53.39sec) and 0.19sec off Rhys Applegarth's 10 year old 200m freestyle record (1min 57.24sec).

Ellis also broke his old 100m individual medley record from May by 0.72sec, setting a time of 58.63sec in Auckland.

Caitlin Deans also broke the Otago girls 14 15 years 800m freestyle record. Deans clocked 8min 46.38sec on her way to gold in Auckland, 1.22sec faster than Phoebe Williams' 2008 record.

Trembath, who won gold in the 100m backstroke early last week, added gold in the men's 50m final to cap a successful meet.

The 18 year old stopped the clock in 24.90sec, 0.24sec ahead of Waikato swimmer Bayley Main.

Trembath had to settle for silver in the 200m backstroke.

Including individual age group medals from the morning sessions, Otago swimmers won nine gold, 10 silver and 9 bronze medals at the championships.
