
Danyon Loader
Loader became one of New Zealand's greatest sportsmen when he won gold medals in the 200m and 400m freestyle at the Atlanta Olympic Games in 1996. He also won a silver medal in the 200m butterfly at the 1992 Olympic Games. Loader won a silver and two bronze medals at the world championships in Rome in 1994, and six medals at the Commonwealth Games. He broke world short course records in the 200m butterfly and 400m freestyle.
Anthony Mosse
Mosse won a bronze medal in the 200m butterfly at the Seoul Olympic Games in 1988 and a silver medal at the world championships in the same event in 1986. He won two gold medals in the 200m butterfly at the Commonwealth Games, a silver medal in the 100m butterfly and bronze medal in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay.
Paul Kingsman
Won a bronze medal in the 200m backstroke at the 1988 Olympic Games and three silver medals and a bronze at the Commonwealth Games.
Jean Stewart
The Otago swimmer won a bronze medal in the 100m backstroke at the 1952 Olympic Games in Helsinki, and a silver and bronze medal in the 110 yards backstroke at the Commonwealth Games in 1950 and 1954.
Gary Hurring
Jean Stewart's son won a silver medal in the 200m backstroke at the world championships in 1978 and a gold medal in the same event at the 1978 Commonwealth Games. He was at his peak in 1980 and missed the Moscow Olympics because of the boycott. He was fourth in the 100m and fifth in the 200m backstroke at the 1984 Olympics.
Lauren Boyle
Boyle reached the high point of her career this week when she won bronze medals in the 400m and 1500m freestyle at the world championships in Barcelona. She was the first New Zealand female swimmer to reach the podium at a long-course world championships. She won a gold and bronze medal at last year's short course world championships in Instanbul.
Rebecca Perrott
Fourth in the 400m freestyle at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal at the age of 15, when she was the youngest competitor to represent New Zealand at the Olympics. Perrott won a gold, silver and two bronze medals at the 1978 Commonwealth Games in Edmonton.
Malcolm Champion
Won New Zealand's first Olympic Games gold medal as a member of the Australasian team in the 4 x 200m freestyle relay at the Stockholm Olympics in 1912.
Anna Simcic
Fifth in the 200m backstroke at the 1992 Olympics and sixth in the same event in Atlanta in 1996. She won a gold and two silver medals at the Commonwealth Games.
Philip Rush
Rush is the world record-holder for the fastest two-way (16hr 10 min) and three-way (28hr 21min) swims of the English Channel. He is one of only two people to complete a double crossing of Cook Strait. He was the first swimmer to complete a double crossing of Lake Taupo.
