Table tennis: Age no barrier to champion

Age proved to be just a number during the Otago Open on Saturday.

Wang Qi (58) dominated Ben Duffy 4-0 in the men's singles final before adding both the over-40 and over-50 men's crowns with comfortable wins over John Fogarty and Andrew Marr respectively.

And young Southland star Michael Zhang (13), who finished runner-up alongside Qi to Duffy and Marr in the men's doubles, dominated the opposition to win the under-15, under-17 and under-21 singles titles.

The most exciting junior prospect in the Southern region also reached the quarterfinal in the men's draw at Marr's expense.

Debbie Garrett claimed the women's title over Gemma Buzzard and Nicky Wallace, and combined with Emma Paton to beat Wallace and Buzzard in the women's doubles.

Debra King won the the over-40 singles and Zi Xiang Li the over-50 women's title.

The Southland combination of Garrett and Jason Peters beat Duffy and Paton 3-0 to claim the mixed doubles title.

Otago's Logan Xu saw off his younger brother Nathan in the under-13 boys' singles final.

Wheelchair athlete John Marrable won the over-50 men's plate final, and Colin Tipper was victorious in the men's over-60 grade.

Time, though, in the form of Qi, looks likely to catch up with Tipper in 2013.

The tournament was held at the Bayfield High School gymnasium, which will also host the South Island championships on August 13 and 14.
