Anderton sticking with tried and true for Easter Cup

A winning combination and their winning tactics will not be changed when Gallant Boy starts in tomorrow's Easter Cup at Riccarton.

The Brian and Shane Anderton-trained 8yr-old will have his first start in the listed 1600m feature since winning the group 3 White Robe Lodge Weight-For-Age at Wingatui in February.

Gallant Boy powered home from off the pace to win the South's signature race with the aid of a rails-hugging ride from Terry Moseley.

Brian Anderton said there would be no changing of rider or changing from those tactics for tomorrow's race.

"Terry is going to stick with him and ride him right through.

"Jacob [Lowry] would have had to get off him next week to ride Boots 'N' All.

"Terry will ride him back again. We have tried riding him on the pace, like in the Timaru Cup, and he is just not as good."

Gallant Boy will go into tomorrow's race without having had a race for over two months.

Anderton said that would not mean the horse would lack fitness.

"We are very happy with him. He had a gallop [yesterday] morning and he worked quite well."

Gallant Boy will clash with the winner of the North Island's signature 1600m event tomorrow.

Awapuni trainer Mark Oulaghan will start Thorndon Mile winner Shadows Cast in the Easter Cup.

The 6yr-old ran eighth in the group 1 Bonecrusher Stakes at Ellerslie and sixth in the Otaki Weight-For-Age Stakes in his two starts since his win in the Trentham feature.

Oulaghan said wet tracks stopped the horse from showing his best in those races.

"We just don't think he is a wet tracker, so that put us on the back burner a wee bit.

"He seems to have come through it OK; at this stage, he seems pretty good. I guess you can never be 100% sure until they have their next start."

Though he was unplaced at Otaki, Shadows Cast still went an excellent race in the unsuitable conditions.

The Per Incanto galloper was less than three lengths behind the winner, star mare Melody Belle.

"I wouldn't say he would have beaten the winner, but I think he would have been far more comfortable on firm ground that day."

The Riccarton track has been rated in a dead condition for much of this week.

"A half-decent track would be right up his alley."

Shadows Cast has form over 1600m at Riccarton.

He dead heated with Son Of Maher in the 2017 Coupland's Mile.

The defence of his race crown turned out to be disastrous when he suffered a cardiac arrhythmia in the race last year.

Tomorrow will be the first time Shadows Cast returns to Riccarton since the incident.

"It was just one of those one-off things. He seems to have got over it all right.

"We don't want a repeat of it."

Contessa Vanessa is one of two North Island raiders in the Easter Cup, alongside Shadows Cast.

The Graeme, Debbie and Bailey Rogerson-trained mare was defeated by Residential when a hot favourite for last month's South Island Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes at Riccarton.

Residential will seek a hat-trick of wins in tomorrow's race.

Two-time Telegraph-winning sprinter Enzo's Lad will have his last race before chasing international glory tomorrow.

The Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained sprinter will start in open handicap company over 1000m in preparation for the group 1 Chairman's Sprint at Sha Tin racecourse in Hong Kong later this month.
