Hokitika races called off due to unsafe track

The thoroughbred racing industry’s shocking start to 2018 has continued with the abandonment of today’s Hokitika races.

Overnight rain has caused the Hokitika track to become unsafe for racing.

‘’Stipendiary Stewards and Westland Racing Club representatives have inspected the track and have concluded that the inconsistencies in the racing surface are a safety concern and as a result the race meeting has been abandoned,’’ New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing said in a statement.

A number of Otago and Southland trainers and jockeys had travelled to the West Coast to compete at the meeting.

Today’s abandonded meeting is another in a series of events called off recently due to unsafe track conditions.
