The Precious One, Outram key rides for Lowry

Wingatui rider Jacob Lowry will not lack horse-power when he links with smart gallopers The Precious One and Outram at tomorrow’s Cromwell Cup meeting.

Lowry will get his first raceday opportunity aboard The Precious One when she steps out in rating 82 company over 1200m in race 2.

The Claire Anderton-trained mare will drop significantly in class after having her first start for the season in the listed Stewards Stakes at the New Zealand Cup Carnival in Christchurch.

If the 5yr-old puts in a similar kind of effort to her last-start sixth behind Shezallmine she should give her rivals plenty to chase.

“It is no secret she has got plenty of ability and she looks very well placed in a race like that,” Lowry said.

Anderton reported that The Precious One had progressed well since finishing five and a-half lengths from Shezallmine at Riccarton.

“She went really well fresh-up against some seasoned horses. She acquitted herself very well,” the trainer told NZ Racing Desk.

“She has come through the run really well. It took a little bit out of her, but she has bounced back and she is really well.”

Lowry is facing the exciting prospect of riding a fully focused mare now Anderton has added blinkers to The Precious One’s bridle.

The gear change should mean Lowry will have the Darci Brahma mare in a very handy spot after she jumps from barrier 7.

“The blinkers will definitely sharpen her up. She has all speed and when she gets it right she really gets it right.”

Lowry will not need to change colours when when he rides The Ace in race 3 for trainer Robert Dennis.

Like The Precious One, the 3yr-old is bred and raced by
the Dennis brothers of Woodlands, in Southland.

The Ace comes into his 1400m maiden assignment after producing a sound seventh in his only start, at Motukarara earlier this month.

The major factor against the horse tomorrow is his barrier 15 draw.

“He has got a sticky gate, but take away that and he is a nice horse going forward,” Lowry said.

“He didn’t do much wrong at Motukarara.”

Lowry is looking forward to reuniting with smart 4yr-old Outram for the first time since their impressive win at Wingatui on Melbourne Cup day.

The Brian and Shane Anderton-trained galloper produced arguably the win of the day when powering down the outer for an emphatic 1200m victory.

Outram steps out from barrier 5 over 1400m tomorrow to race in rating 72 company, which should suit the horse even more.

“It was a pretty good win last time and he is not a 1200m horse.”

“He is a horse I hold in quite high regard. The step up to 1400m should be an asset to him.

“He has got a cosy gate to work with, so I am expecting a pretty good run from him.”

The main challenge for Outram is that he must adapt from racing on the large Wingatui track to the tighter turns of Cromwell racecourse.

Lowry said it could possibly be a problem for the rangey 4yr-old, but it was not something he was too concerned about.

The jockey also rides Raise Ya Cards in race 1, Letsbringiton in race 6 and Qashqai in race 7.

He rated Raise Ya Cards the best winning chance of the trio.
