Walkinshaw was successful with Kai And Mighty, who was having his first start for the stable and new owners.
Walkinshaw was previously based at Redwood, combining work with trainer Wayne Higgs and preparing a small team.
"Wayne was cutting back on his team and my partner [Shona McLelland] had family in Invercargill so we decided to make the move," Walkinshaw said.
Julius Bardon, the winner of six races, has been sold out of the Higgs stable to Australia.
Walkinshaw is working for the Shirley stable in the morning and he has four horses of his own to work in the afternoon.
Kai And Mighty, who had not raced since August, was twice placed in eight starts when trained by Balclutha breeder Barry Gooch. The 5yr-old Spirit Of Zeus-Dream Knight gelding was bought two months ago by McLelland, Steven Berry and Mark Baird, of Hornby, John Sinclair, of Rangiora and Gavin Grant, of Wellington.
Kai And Mighty is a half-brother to Benhar Brat (three wins).
• Bettor Cover Lover, who won a trial brilliantly at Addington on Monday, has drawn six in an eight-horse field for the Premier Mares Championship at Addington on Friday night.
Carabella has drawn three and De Lovely four in the 1950m (mobile) event.
Bettor Cover Lover won her trial against three others in 2.25.8 (2.00.3 mile rate) for the 1950m (mobile). She prevailed by half a head over Storm Light, who is among her rivals on Friday night.
Bettor Cover Lover has not raced since she won the Queen Of Hearts at Alexandra Park on December 16 after an eight month lay-off through injury.
Pukekohe trainer Brent Mangos has had Bettor Cover Lover based at the Woodend Beach stable of David and Catherine Butt.
Bettor Cover Lover is unbeaten in two starts at Addington. She won a Sires' Stakes heat and the Yearling Sales Graduette as a 2yr-old in her first two races.
The last North Island-trained winner of the group two Premier Mares Championship was Coburg from the Mike Berger stable in 2004.
