Racing: Inferno set for Riccarton win

Inferno is back on the track where she has won two Canterbury Gold Cups - in the North Canterbury Cup at Riccarton tomorrow.

She is reunited with rider Shankar Muniandy, who has ridden the mare in her nine wins.

She carried 57kg to win the weight-for-age Canterbury Gold Cup (2000m) for the second time at Riccarton in May. She has 59kg in a field lacking depth tomorrow.

Inferno has had two races up to a mile in a fresh campaign and she should be ready to reproduce winning form. She has been entered for the New Zealand Cup next month.

Capital Diamond has been scratched at Trentham today in favour of a start in the Coupland's Mile Prelude tomorrow.

Comanche Gold, a winner over 1600m at Riccarton last month and runner up to Aussieaussieaussie over 1800m at his last start there, is an appealing prospect. His Riverton trainer Graham Eade won races with Touchdown and Flirtation at Wyndham yesterday.

Acquit, winner of the Wyndham Cup yesterday, is headed to the New Zealand Cup. Isla Bank trainer Kerry King plans to give the Towkay mare her final lead up race in the Metropolitan Handicap (2500m). King won the Wyndham Cup in 2006 with Jetmaster.

Southern Lord, runner up to Sacred Falls in the Challenge Stakes at Ruakaka and the Hawkes Bay Guineas, should come into his own in the absence of that colt in the Canterbury Stakes tomorrow.

Trained at Matamata by Alan Tait, he is an entrant for the New Zealand Two Thousand Guineas.

Kate's First, the outstanding race mare has died after a difficult foaling, Harness Racing New Zealand, stated yesterday. Her filly foal by Bettor's Delight survived. Kate's First was 19.

She won 19 races including the 1997 Auckland Trotting Cup, Sires' Stakes Final and New Zealand Oaks and $624,000 in stakes. The daughter of Holmes Hanover and Pleasant Franco has left the minor winners, Kate's Rocket and First Art from 10 foals.

John Cox and Tracie McGrannachan are now training in partnership at Winton. They have Grant Us Peace engaged at Gore tomorrow. Grant Us Peace, the winner of races at Gore and Wyndham for Cox, has not raced since April.
