Racing: Kind act brings reward

An act of kindness several years ago gave ''Noddy'' Orr one of his best days in harness racing at Ascot Park yesterday.

Orr, the president of the Northern Southland Trotting Club, was on hand in his role as president and as a proud owner when The Receptionist won a heat of the Southern Belle Speed Series.

Orr, a Balfour farmer, bred the 5yr-old mare after his own broodmare died and Ray Faithful gave him the Soky's Atom mare Candle In The Wind to breed from.

The result was The Receptionist, who scored her fifth career win when coming from the back of the field to beat Shezaball and Tact Hayleys Delight in 2.07.1 for the 1700m for Orr and co-owner Blair McVicar.

Orr struggled for words as he considered his success on his club's biggest day of the of the year.

''I've had one or two horses but this is the best I've had.''

Orr is equally as proud of the club maintaining the stakes for the feature meeting at a minimum of $10,000 per race.

''We've been doing this for two or three years and we'll keep doing it as long as we can.''
