Racing: Negus hoping for victory anthem

Bruce Negus thinks the tune Music plays at Winton today will be more melodic than in recent weeks.

The 3yr-old was one of two products of Lis Mara to impress for Negus earlier this season, with Quick As A Trick also making his mark through the grades.

But while the form line has not looked so great for Music recently, Negus has not been too concerned by the ninth at Wyndham in early February and a sixth at Waikouaiti a week later.

''They've both been track record [races],'' Negus said.

''After he had a stone bruise and had a couple of weeks off, he just wasn't quite fit enough for track record speed. I won't have any excuses tomorrow, because he's as fit as I can get him.''

Music will start race 11 from barrier 2 on the second line of the mobile barrier.

''I feel the draw is probably going to mean he'll need a bit of luck, but I expect him to run a better race.''

If his form tightens up, Music may join stable-mate Quick As A Trick in a bid for the group 2 Southern Supremacy Stakes at Ascot Park on March 30.

Merilane (race 9) is one of Negus' most improved horses, which he attributes to getting on top of her cramping problems.

The trotting mare has been treated with a ''heap'' of vitamin E, which seems to have worked.

She backs up from a good fifth at Wyndham on Sunday.

''Her last two races that she's won have been racing three days after a disappointing run and she wasn't disappointing at all the other day,'' Negus said.

''She trotted 4.11, which two months ago, I would have said was impossible.''
