Jonathan Riddell won his second million-dollar race for the season when he rode Fort Lincoln in the Karaka Million at Ellerslie yesterday. Riddell won the $1 million Two Thousand Guineas on Jimmy Choux at Riccarton in November.
Jimmy Choux is headed to the $2.2 million New Zealand Derby at Ellerslie on March 5.
The race yesterday was for horses sold at the NZ Bloodstock yearling sales.
Fort Lincoln was purchased for $110,000 by Lincoln Farms at the premier sale at Karaka last February. Lincoln Farms is an Auckland company comprising John and Lynn Street; Graeme and Erin Blackburn; Kevin (brother of John) and Glenis Street.
John Street and Kevin Blackburn operate two supermarkets in Henderson.
The company has been racing horses, both thoroughbred and standardbred, since 1987.
Fort Lincoln is a colt by the Australian-based Charge Forward and the first foal of the unraced Flying Spur mare Belle Toujours, a sister to Flying Babe, the top NZ 2yr-old in 2000-01.
"I thought he'd run early,"Lisa Latta, his trainer, said.
She was involved in selecting the colt.
The colt was offered by Curraghmore Stud for Joan Egan and the estate of Marilyn Kent.
Curraghmore will offer a sister to Fort Lincoln at the premier sale today.
