The bookies might disagree but Cody Singer is not yet ruling out a South Island victory in today's $75,000 Grand National Hurdle at Riccarton.

While Singer is based in Palmerston North, he will jump aboard the Yaldhurst-trained Supercharged today on the 9yr-old's home track.

The Ross Beckett-trained gelding is joined by Winton jumper Gargamel as the only two South Island representatives in the field.

They have been labelled by the TAB fixed-odds bookmakers as the outsiders of the field at $21 and $18 respectively.

Singer does not appear in recent form summaries for Supercharged, as Michael Mitchell has ridden on the past three occasions, but his association with the horse goes back a long way.

''I knew the horse from when he was a 2yr-old,'' he said.

''I did a lot of work with him when he was at Richard Collett's.

"I rode him in a couple of highweights and I rode him in the Waikato Hurdles two years ago.

"His form has really bloomed since he's been down south.

"With the drop in weight, I think he'll be a lightweight danger.''

Supercharged was fourth, 12 lengths behind Prestigiosa, in the Sydenham Hurdles on Saturday when he carried 69kg. He will have 65.5kg to haul around the 4200m today.

''It wasn't the worst run [on Saturday] - he didn't have the best pull in the weights.

"The track might have been a bit too dry for him as well, but with those weights, it was quite tough. The extra distance should be OK.''

Singer cited the Kevin Myers-trained pair of Houndscry and Prestigiosa as the biggest dangers.

Singer encouraged punters to forgive Stuertzer in today's 0-1 win steeple after she dislodged him on Saturday at the last fence when well back from the winner, Brer.

''I think that was a bit of bad luck. She put in an extra one [stride] and barely rose and just went through it a wee bit,'' Singer said.

''She's an absolutely phenomenal jumper nine times out of 10. She was actually disappointing on the first day but we put that down to the fact she didn't travel that great and she was a bit tired from the trip down.

''She seems to have perked up. I'm staying with Lisa Latta at the moment and she's said she's pretty bright.''
