Racing: Weight to suit Tommy Tucker

The weights might finally be falling in the favour of Tommy Tucker.

The Timaru Cup winner will carry 57.5kg in tomorrow's $50,000 Easter Cup at Riccarton - the lightest weight he has carried since winning the Wanaka Cup with 55kg on board in November.

"He's not carrying 60kg in the weights which is a big help as he's not that big,'' jockey Jake Lowry said.

"He nearly beat The Diamond One carrying 60kg in the White Robe and he gave her 2.5kg. It's going to be a massive help.''

Tommy Tucker even had to carry 59kg in his bid at group 1 glory at Otaki in February, but the presence of Scapolo (61kg) has helped the Brian and Shane Anderton-trained runner considerably in the weights.

Tommy Tucker had a month between runs after his Otaki effort, finishing eighth at Riverton on March 26 over 1200m.

The 1200m distance was an ideal pipe-opener for Tommy Tucker and Lowry before tomorrow's challenge.

"He got back and as we were making a move into the race, we went into a bit of rough ground and I had to keep him steady. He did make plenty of ground late.

"All he's done is improved in his work. He's stepped up to the mark and I'm very happy going into this race.''

Hexie Hao provided Lowry with one half of a feature race double at Riccarton on April 2 and Lowry is confident of another forward showing from the Claire Anderton-trained 7yr-old.

"Claire does a good job with all her horses and I expect him to be up to the mark,'' he said.

"It was a very bold effort and I don't see why he can't do it again. The 2000m shouldn't be a worry - he ran third in the Gore Cup and I think that was his only time over 2000m.

Lowry pairs up with Perceptive in the New Zealand Bloodstock Insurance Stakes.

The filly has turned the corner in recent starts, but is still up against some fillies who have won up to three races.

"It's a massive step for her, but you're only 3 once,'' he said.

"Being a maiden it's going to be tough, but for the pedigree being a mare, if she ran home and ran a place, you'd be rapt.''

Lowry said the best of his other rides was Kirina Belle in race 1, a rating 75 1800m.

"She's got form on the board.''
