Robertson among finalists for award

Stalwart Graeme Robertson's 60 years of service to the Riverton Trotting Club has been recognised by the judges of the Southland Harness Racing Awards.

Robertson's remarkable contribution to the club has resulted in him being made a finalist for the contribution to Southland harness racing award.

Robertson (91) has served as the treasurer of the club for 40 years during his 60-year tenure on its committee.

The award would add further reward to Robertson's line-up of accolades for service to his community.

He was awarded the Queen's Service Medal in 2016.

Robertson is a life member of the Riverton rugby and golf clubs, as well as the trotting club. He is a life member of four Southland rowing organisations.

Gore trainer Ross Wilson is also nominated for the award as is Southland administrator Jason Broad.

The Southland Harness Racing Awards evening is set down for August 12.

Star performers Somejoy and Duke Of Wellington head the list of finalists for the Southland horse of the year. Harness Jewels trotters Smokey Mac and War Machine are also nominated for the supreme horse award.

Somejoy bettered a 1.56 mile rate in four of her six wins last season for trainer Clark Barron.

Her best win came in the $30,000 South Of The Waitaki race at Addington during New Zealand Cup week.

Duke Of Wellington went from a maiden to a group 2 winner in just 10 starts last term.

His five wins and four placings included victory in the Southern Supremacy Stakes final.

War Machine broke the Roxburgh 2700m all-comers' trotting record in one of his five wins last season while Smokey Mac shot through the trotting grades with six wins.

Jumpforjoy, the dam of Somejoy, and Galleon's Honour, the dam of Duke Of Washington, are nominated for Southland broodmare of the year.

Righteous Franco, the dam of Harness Jewels winner Pat Delight is also nominated.

Breeder-owner and administrator Kenny Baynes, trainers Brett Gray and Murray Brown and drivers Brent Barclay and Sheree Tomlinson will vie for an achievement award.

The Otago Harness Racing Awards finalists will be announced later this month.

Southland-owned pacer Captain Dolmio will step on to a racetrack for the first time in 15 months today.

The Robert Dunn-trained gelding returns from a joint problems that threatened to end his promising career in April last year.

Captain Dolmio faces the All Stars stable pair of Dream About Me and Thefixer in a 2000m workout at Rangiora.

The Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen duo are both returning from hoof injuries which cut their seasons short last term.
