A different type of racing bade farewell to Forbury Park on Saturday.

The soon-to-be-closed harness racing track played host to the Vice President’s 5000m running race on Saturday.

First held in 1925 and hosted by the Caversham athletics and harriers club, the race was held at Forbury Park nearly every year since its inception.

However, it was confirmed in February the track is to be sold and the club is going through changes.

That leaves the Vice President’s races looking for a new venue, which is yet to be decided upon.

There were plenty of memories flowing on Saturday.

The race takes the form of a handicap event over 5000m and has categories for seniors, colts and walkers.

Caversham athletics and harriers club stalwarts (from left) John Stinson, Stuart Melville, Maria Sleeman, Ron Cain and Noeline Cain reflect last week on 96 years of hosting the Vice President’s 5000m race at the track.
Originally a three-mile race, it switched to 5km in 1974 to fall in line with the metric system.

Several club stalwarts were on hand before the race to reflect on the race’s significance.

"We’re going to miss it; I know I will," John Stinson said.

"I’ve got a lot of happy memories out of this one.

"It’s always been one of my favourites.

"It’s one race, because it’s handicapped, you’ve never felt lonely.

"There’s always someone ahead of you, someone behind you, someone pushing you along."

The race is open to all runners from all clubs. More than 100 turned out on Saturday.

The handicapped race was won by Lesley McCormack in 29min 18sec.
