Wingatui jockey Shankar Muniandy went from zero to hero when riding Finbarr to win on his home track yesterday.

Heroics came when Muniandy plotted a path for Finbarr from the widest possible draw in race 9.

The horse impressed his jockey with his big performance, travelling wide throughout with his top weight of 59kg.

"Drawn out there, you can’t do anything about it but try to find cover, but it never came," Muniandy said.

"But he just travelled like the best horse in the race all of the way and at the top of the straight I just took advantage of that.

"The further he goes, he’s a better horse, I reckon."

Zero is the number of metres Muniandy went in race 8 after being dumped from the saddle of Juliette during the first attempt to start the event.

That was the beginning of an incredible sequence of dramatic events to unfold before the race was completed.

The remainder of the field jumped cleanly from the gates but were soon pulled up when a false start was declared. It was then determined to be incorrectly declared, and starter Russell McAra was fined for the indiscretion.

Juliette galloped riderless around the track and a fierce Polly Park followed her around, as she was unable to be restrained by rider BB Hong.

Both horses were  scratched before the restart,  which began about 15 minutes late.

The race’s biggest drama came in the home straight when  Samantha Wynne fell from the saddle of She’s Fun.

She’s Fun was tightened for racing room between race winner Montserrat and runner-up Advent passing the 200m mark.

Wynne was flung from her saddle and trampled by her own mount in a nasty fall.

She was transferred by ambulance to Dunedin Hospital for assessment with a knee injury.

She was in good spirits when she spoke to the Otago Daily Times late last night.

The extent of her injury and how long she will be  out of the saddle are not yet known, but she will miss four rides at today’s Trentham meeting. Stewards opened and adjourned an inquiry into the fall.

Montserrat went on to comprehensively win the eventful race by almost four lengths.

Finbarr’s win in the following event was dull by comparison, but the manner of his victory suggests he will give his trainer, Gay Robinson,  plenty more excitement.
