Wingatui apprentice Sha Wahab will be out of action for up to six weeks after a trackwork mishap.

The jockey was a late withdrawal from his rides on Champions day at Wingatui after the incident late last week.

''I ran into the running rail.''

''I cut my tendon and my nerve in my foot.''

The 24-year-old was given a recovery time of up to six weeks when treatment of his injury was completed at the weekend.

''I went for the operation on Saturday and I will be out for four to six weeks.''

A more precise indication of his return will be known next week when he undergoes more treatment.

''I can't move my toe. I need to see the physio next week.''

Any injury is untimelty for a jockey and Wahab was naturally disappointred to be on the sidelines for the forseeable future.

The apprentice, who rides with a 4kg claim, was booked to ride Newsflash, a winner at Ascot Park yesterday.

''I was supposed to ride one of the horses and he won. But that's racing.''

The jockey won on another Brian and Shane Anderton runner, Perceptive, at Gore last week.

That was Wahab's second New Zealand winner. He scored on Keep The Courage for Riverton trainer Kelvin Tyler at Wingatui late last year.

Wahab moved south in October, to join Terry Kennedy's Wingatui stables.

Wahab was linked to Wanganui trainer Kevin Myers prior to that.

There may be one bonus from being out of raceday action. Wahab hopes to returning to Singapore to visit family after his medical appointments are completed.

''Seeing as I am out, I can't do too much so I might get back to Singapore for a few weeks to see my family over there.''

He is hoping to organise that soon as the boredom from sitting around and not being able to get on a horse sets in.

''Yeah, that's for sure,'' he joked.
