Williamses have strong hand in trot

Owners Lex and Heather Williams have a massive hand in the feature trot at Oamaru today.

The Waimate couple will be represented in the 2600m handicap by leading chances One Over Da Skye and One Apollo.

One Over Da Skye will aim to continue her brilliant summer form and notch a hat-trick of wins.

The Greg And Nina Hope-trained trotter has been on her best behaviour in her past two starts with wins at Winton and Omakau.

The Daughter of the Williams’ champion mare, One Over Kenny, will start from the 10m mark alongside One Apollo.

One Apollo will take another step towards lining up in this season’s feature 3yr-old trotting races.

The Brent White-trained squaregaiter went a big race for second behind rival Time For Diamonds at his most recent start in a capacity field at Motukarara.

"He went a great race," White said."I am rapt with him. He is trotting super and he is very bright in himself.

"He will give them a good nudge so long as he doesn’t have to do too much work early."

One Apollo came with a big late finish at Motukarara and that speed is one of his biggest weapons.

"He has got a bit of top-end speed, a bit more than he looks like because he is a big boned horse."

One Apollo looks to have the talent to match most of his rivals in today’s race.

However, he will be having just his seventh start so  does not have the experience of his race-hardened rivals.

And that is something of which White is wary.

Safety through today’s race, the trotter will be aimed at next month’s Geraldine meeting.

"He will have this race then he will go to Geraldine for the 3yr-old race there and then after that he might race in the Hambletonian.

"He will have to set up if he is going to race the cream of the crop and hopefully he can step up."

Time For Diamonds, who beat One Apollo at Motukarara, looks one of the toughest for the two Williams-owned trotters to beat.

Like One Over Da Skye, the Allan Ford-trained trotter will seek a hat-trick of wins today.

Another winning chance is Sam Galleon.

The Oamaru trotter won his only start in his last campaign on his home track.

The Phil Williamson-trained squaregaiter resumes today without having a trial or workout this time in.

In today’s feature pace, Young Conqueror steps out for the first time in Canterbury trainer Regan Todd’s colours.

The 5yr-old gelding as failed in stronger fields in his last two starts for former trainer Brett Gray.

Young Conqueror will start from the 25m mark, 10m behind main rivals Machs Mareta and Clive.

Overarm looks the best chance of the horses starting from the front mark in the 2600m handicap.
