Bronze for Mason in U23 world champs

Ben Mason led his crew to hold off a spirited challenge and claim a spot on the podium.

The former Otago Boys’ High School rower won bronze at the under-23 world championships in Italy.

Mason’s New Zealand quadruple sculls crew finished in 5min 58.91sec, holding off the Czech Republic by 0.68sec to finish third in the A final in Varese, near Milan.

The crew, which also included Jack Ready, Ben Olifiers and Jonte Wright, trailed the Czechs at the first 500m split.

The Kiwis closed the gap at the 1km mark, before edging ahead.

Italy won the race in 5min 53.05sec, followed just under 2sec later by Germany.

Otago duo Reuben Cook and Logan Docherty finished fourth in the C final at the same regatta.

They joined to race in the lightweight men’s double sculls, finishing their final in 6min 35.35sec.

In the under-19 regatta, former Columba College rower Siena Snow, who now represents Dunstan Arm, claimed a fifth place in the women’s eight A final.

The New Zealand crew finished in 6min 17.71sec, just under 3sec off the third-placed German crew.

The United States won in 6min 12.16sec.

In the under-19 men’s four, Otago Boys’ pupil Henry Kirk was part of the New Zealand crew to finish fourth in the C final.

Alongside Nicholas Bryan, Adam Wilson and Cameron Macgillivray, he clocked a time of 6min 13.01sec.

Wanaka sisters Phoebe and Alice Wallis, who attend Rangi Ruru Girls School in Christchurch, combined to make the under-19 women’s pair A final.

They finished sixth in the final in 7min 42.34sec.
