Rowing: Otago club scullers impress at regatta

The Otago club dominated the sculling events at the Dunstan regatta at the weekend.

The quadruple sculls of Jordan Saville, Clay Forward, Bryce Abernethy and Jack O'Leary reaped the rewards of the hard work they had done over the winter months.

They demonstrated skilful technique and were convincing winners of both the club and under-18 events on Lake Dunstan.

Forward, one of the most promising scullers in the province, won the men's under-18 single sculls and Abernethy and O'Leary won the under-18 double sculls.

Nick Jackson (Wanaka) was runner-up in the single sculls and Abernethy third.

The Wanaka crew of Jared Wellman, James Redai, Jamie Bowley, Bailey Masters and cox George Heard won the men's under-18 four.

Maadi Cup champions Hannah Duggan and Zoe McBride (Otago) were dominant from the start when winning the women's club double sculls from Oamaru's Johanna and Caitlin Kearney.

They also had it for themselves when McBride won the under-18 single sculls from Duggan.

Chris Drummond and Alex Yarnall won the boys under-15 double sculls when the newly formed Cromwell club competed in an Otago regatta for the first time.

They combined with Javagn Nanomalo and Regan Stirling and cox Todd Cruthers to win the boys under-15 four.

The experienced Port United pair of Robyn Cameron and Imogen Coxhead made sure they retained the dominance their club has in masters women's rowing by winning the double sculls.

The Otago University crew of Justin Evans, Michael Nisbet, Jamie Saunders and Thomas Stott finished a close second to the Southland crew of Waihopai in the men's open four.

Saunders and Stott won the club double sculls.

Anna McAslin (North End) had a close tussle with Hannah Baddock (University) before winning the women's club single sculls.

The North End crew of Claudia Dyet, Annabelle Palmer, Briar Alexander, Claudia Grave and cox Hannah Perkins won the women's under-16 quadruple sculls.

The North End crew of Julia Landels, Georgia Lepine, Elisa Adams, Maggie Burns and cox Perkins won the novice quadruple sculls.

Otago University novices Nicola Shanks and Sophie Smith won the women's novice double sculls.

Columba College's Emma Winders and Annabelle Angland convincingly won the under 16-double sculls.

Winders was second in the under-16 single sculls to Maysie Scott (Oamaru).

The Dunstan scullers Danyan Trask and Reed Frewen made use of their local knowledge to finish first and second in the men's under-16 single sculls.

Dunstan also won the men's novice coxed four and the men's under-16 coxed four.
