A 17-year-old Dunstan rower has been named in the New Zealand under-21 team for home and away regattas against Australia.

Dunstan High School pupil Macaela Turfus, who turned 17 in February, was named in the women's lightweight double sculls team for the regattas.

Turfus was the only Otago rower named in the 18-strong squad to compete in Sydney from June 30-July 2 and at Lake Karapiro from September 8-10.

The team was named following a three-day trial at Lake Karapiro at the end of last week. The Dunstan Arm Rowing Club said she did not expect to make the team at such a young age.

‘‘I was stoked to find out that I'd got in, considering there were a lot of bigger, older girls going for it.''

Turfus took up the sport four years ago, after seeing rowers on Lake Twizel during trips there.

Otago University Rowing Club member Oliver Tyro was named as a non-travelling reserve for the squad.
