The Otago University Rowing club achieved a significant milestone when three of its rowers won red coats for the first time.

Fiona Bourke (22), Sarah Lindley (21) and Michael Dessoulavy (22) were members of Southern Regional Performance crews that won premier titles at the New Zealand championships at Ruataniwha last weekend.

Bourke and Lindley were members of the women's eight.

Dessoulavy was cox in Hamish Bond's men's eight.

The Otago University club was formed in 1929 but this was the first time any club member had won a red coat.

Bourke will attend trials at Lake Karapiro next week and is expected to be selected for the world championships in Bled, Slovenia, next August.

Her best chance of selection is in the quadruple or the double sculls.

At the start of last year, Bourke was just a promising rower. She now has her eyes on the London Olympics.

Bourke, who comes from Takapau in Hawkes Bay, was a member of the New Zealand quadruple sculls crew that finished sixth in the final of the world championships at Lake Karapiro last year.

''I had no experience in a quad before,'' Bourke said. ''I was thrown in at the deep end. But we gelled as a team.''

Bourke was selected for the world championships after being a member of the New Zealand eight that finished runner up to the United States at the world under-23 championships in Belarus in July.

She started the sport just four years ago at the University of Otago.

''I'd never played any sport before I started university,'' Bourke said.

''I was tall and my friends told me to try rowing. I caught the rowing bug and never looked back.''

Lindley, a physical education student, comes from Queenstown and started rowing in her final year at Wakatipu High School.

She won a silver medal in the club four Bourke was also in the crew two years ago but this was her first national title.

Bourke and Findlay were both members of the Otago University eight that competed in an international event in South Africa two years ago.

Dessoulavy, a physical education student, was a member of the New Zealand University eight that won the international university eight at Chengdu, China, in 2009 and was second last year.

The University club operates from the Aquatic Centre and also keeps a boat at Henley.

It has three coaches - Glen Sinclair, Sonya Walker and Richard Parr.

The Otago club men's novice double sculls of Jack O'Leary (14) and Bryce Abernethy (16) won a silver medal at the New Zealand championships. John Parnell was the coach.
