Rowing: Win keeps OBHS on top in Otago

The Fred Strachan-coached Otago Boys High School squad continued its domination of interschool rowing in Otago when it won the annual Head of the Harbour regatta at the weekend.

OBHS was the top school for the 40th consecutive year when it headed the boys' aggregate with 39 points in the event on the Taieri River at Henley. It was followed by John McGlashan College on 13 and Logan Park High School on nine.

The annual interschool competition for the George Thorn Trophy and the boys' aggregate was first held in 1954 and OBHS first won it in 1962.

The dominance started under coach Maurice Jones in 1969 and has continued under Strachan over the past decade.

OBHS set its seal on the regatta from the start when the crew of Lachlan Landells, Brodie Hume, Ken McLellan, Cooper Gilmour and cox Aaron Woodhead won the senior quadruple sculls from John McGlashan.

McLellan and Gilmour were replaced by the experienced Joe Latta and Robbie Mears in the senior coxed four that added more points to the aggregate trophy.

OBHS crews took the top two placings in the intermediate boys' double sculls, with Landells and Hume beating McLellan and Gilmour.

Mears won the senior boys' single sculls and Gilmour the intermediate boys' event.

It was closer in the girls' competition, with Columba College winning the Martha Gillies trophy with 26 points ahead of Logan Park on 21 and Otago Girls High School on 17.
