Choice Varsity’s main headache

The Bookworms have aced the first semester.

But University coach Jason Macdonald knows the real test comes deep in the season when everyone is struggling with injury.

He is thrilled with his side’s perfect start, though.

They are the only unbeaten team in division 1 of the Dunedin club rugby competition.

They have bagged maximum points in all five games and have a four-point buffer at the top of the standings.

So far, Macdonald’s biggest problem has been trying to fit all his halfbacks into the starting XV.

That headache eased a little late last month when quality No9 Brad Campbell decided to transfer to Harbour.

That leaves Connor McLeod, Kieran McClea and Isaac Kramers battling for the starting spot.

McClea started on the wing during the 40-29 win against Green Island in a top-of-the-table clash at Logan Park on the weekend.

More selection dilemmas are ahead when Mika Muliaina returns from the under-20 rugby Championship in South Africa.

His brother, Rico Muliaina, has slotted in nicely at No10 during his absence.

‘‘What a problem to have, though,’’ Macdonald said.

‘‘I’m a firm believer that sometimes we have to make calls where it’s a matter of having the best 15 out there or the best seven backs.

‘‘Sometimes that does mean that we might ask guys to play out of their preferred position and everyone that’s done that so far has absolutely acquitted themselves.’’

There is real grunt in the engine room.

Tighthead Steve Salelea has been a standout alongside impressive hooker Oliver Hatch.

Giant lock Mitch Tinnock has been an unsung hero.

He is a big unit and a key plank in the University set piece.

The students score 41.9% of their tries from lineout possession according to the statistics gathered by Elevate Analysis. And Tinnock can claim some credit for that.

‘‘He’s only young and his game will keep growing but he’s a quality lineout forward,’’ Macdonald said.

‘‘He’s got a massive engine. He’s got an exceptional skill set for a big man as well. I think it’s only a matter of time [before he reaches representative level].’’

The club has some talented loose forwards as well. They have had excellent service from Highlanders back-up Will Stodart.

And Matt Brock, Tom Devery, Thomas Spain and Aaron Withy all add to the depth University boasts this season.

Highlanders back-up fullback Stanley Solomon has been a livewire out wide.

University will look to extend their winning streak when they host an improved but winless Alhambra-Union at the University Oval tomorrow.

Taieri should be too strong for Zingari-Richmond at Peter Johnstone Park.

Harbour got clobbered 66-22 by Kaikorai last weekend and will look to atone at Watson Park against a Southern side which looks mid-pack at best.

Dunedin has posted back-to-back wins following a disappointing start and will play Kaikorai at Kettle Park.

Kaikorai love a good counterattack, whereas Dunedin lean more heavily on their set piece and creating pressure at the breakdown.
