Game important for Matakanui Combined

It is a simple equation for Matakanui Combined: beat Roxburgh and cement a spot in the top six for the first time.

The same carrot is dangling for the men from the Teviot Valley, so it should be an exciting match at Roxburgh tomorrow.

Matakanui sits in seventh spot in the standings on 14 points, one point behind Roxburgh, and neither side has been in the top tier since the format's inception in 2013.

Matakanui Combined manager Duncan Nicholson said the Steve Hore-coached side would be approaching the game in much the same way as any other.

''We'll be doing the same,'' he said.

''There was good intensity at training.''

Nicholson said Hore had emphasised the importance of the match.

''He reinforced how important the game is, obviously, as a team and as a club, to get us into this next bracket,'' Nicholson said.

Despite Roxburgh's recent poor run of form, Nicholson was wary of what it could do on its home ground.

''They have been up and down but can pull one out of the box when they need to,'' he said.

If Matakanui does win tomorrow, one other obstacle may stand in its way.

Cromwell is also in the hunt for the top six and is sitting in eighth spot, a further point behind.

However, it is a tall order for Cromwell.

It will need at least a bonus-point victory over Arrowtown away from home and the points differential to go its way.

Other matches being played in the final round before the split feature top-of-the-table Maniototo up against Upper Clutha A in Ranfurly, Wakatipu hosting Upper Clutha B in Queenstown, and Alexandra at home to Wakatipu Wanderers.
