Otago acknowledges it is talking to former All Black loose forward Adam Thomson about a return to the blue and gold but nothing has been decided.

Thomson (37) is still interested in playing and has been taking the field for Takapuna in the North Harbour club compeition over the past few weeks.

But the athletic loose forward has not signed with the North Harbour union and has talked to Otago officials.

A player of his experience and skills would be useful in the Mitre 10 Cup.

Otago still has a couple of gaps in its squad for additional players.

Thomson suffered a spinal infection around Christmas in 2017 which kept him in hospital for a significant time in Japan.

He was not expected to play again.

But he never retired and has eventually got back on the field.

He signed to play Major League Rugby in the United States this year but, because of visa issues, he did not get to play.

Thomson has played 54 games for Otago, scoring 15 tries. He last played for the province in 2012.

He has also played in Australia and Japan.

Otago has three representatives in the All Black squad which will take on Argentina tomorrow morning, its highest representation since 2012.

Ben Smith will start while Josh Ioane and Liam Coltman are in the reserves.

The province had four players take the field for the All Blacks in 2002 when Simon Maling, Joe McDonnell, Byron Kelleher and Tom Willis took the field.
