Taieri will have the backing of the old-timers when it attempts to beat Harbour at Carisbrook today to win the club's second premier banner.
The only other time Taieri won the championship was in 1955, when it shared the honours with University A.
Eight members of that team will be guests at a special breakfast at the club today and will then be taken to Carisbrook to support the team.
The oldest member of the group is Len Blackie (92), who started playing premier rugby in 1937 and returned to the premier team after service in World War 2. He was the oldest premier player in the history of the Taieri club at that time.
Former All Black captain Peter Johnstone, with Bob Turvey as his assistant, coached the 1955 team.
Out-of-town players from that team supporting Taieri today are Graeme Deiley (Ashburton), Laurie Kenworthy and Malcolm McLeod (Christchurch) and Finn McKenzie (Oamaru). Players from Dunedin are Dave Young, Noel Hunt, and Len Sinclair.
The team for the final game in 1955 was: Allan Ives (fullback), Jack McLachlan, Ken Frew (wings), Paul Andrew, Graeme Deiley (centres), Des Hansen (second five-eighth), Malcolm McLeod (first-five), Ron Kydd (halfback) Doug Jenkins (No 8), Laurie (Brugh) Kenworthy, Ron Sharples (flankers), Finn McKenzie, Dave Young (locks), Laurie Kovaleski, Noel Hunt, Bob Young (front row).
There will also be a reunion at the Zingari-Richmond club celebrating the club's four banners that were won in 1959, 1961, 1963 and 1968.
The most notable person attending is 1946 Otago representative Eric Watson who coached the winning 1959 team.
