Rugby: Crawford in running for volunteer of the year award

Southern stalwart Blair Crawford has been nominated for the volunteer of the year award in the New Zealand Rugby awards.

Crawford, who played more than 100 games for Southern as a midfield back, is one of three nominees in the Charles Monro volunteer of the year trophy.

Crawford is the Southern club captain, is on the Metropolitan junior rugby committee, where he does the draws, he also coaches a Southern junior side and helped successfully run the South Island primary school weight grade tournament in Dunedin this year.

Also in the running for the volunteer award are David Hickey (Auckland) and Peter te Tai (Southland).

Otago Spirit winger Carla Hohepa is the first female to be named in the sevens category.

She will be up against Bay of Plenty speedster Zar Lawrence and Wellington youngster Julian Savea for the award.

The nominees for Air New Zealand Cup player of the year are Southland lock Josh Bekhuis and two new All Blacks, Mike Delany (Bay of Plenty) and Zac Guildford (Hawkes Bay).

Chiefs hooker Aled de Malmanche is nominated for the Super 14 player of the year, along with Chiefs fullback Mils Muliaina and Hurricanes midfielder Ma'a Nonu.

The nominees for the women's player of the year will be announced after the Black Ferns play England at Twickenham early tomorrow morning.

Team of the year nominees are Canterbury, New Zealand Under-20 and Wanganui.

The Tom French Memorial Maori player of the year will be decided from Guildford (Ngati Kahungunu), Wellington's Cory Jane (Ngati Kahungunu) and Canterbury lock Isaac Ross (Kai Tahu).

The referee of the year and the Kelvin R. Tremain Memorial Player of the Year will both be named on the night of the awards on December 17 in Auckland.

The Steinlager Salver, a special presentation to an individual who has made an outstanding contribution to New Zealand rugby, will also be presented at the awards function.
