Rugby: Kaikorai retains Challenge Shield

A late penalty goal by first five-eighth Cam Rutherford enabled Kaikorai to retain the Speight's Challenge Shield when it beat Taieri 11-10 at Peter Johnstone Park yesterday in the first round of Dunedin club rugby.

Zingari-Richmond defended heroically when it was beaten 18-3 by Dunedin at Kettle Park.

Wing Nik Tupaea scored three tries as Southern beat Green Island 32-22 at Bathgate Park.

There are two more games on Saturday with Alhambra-Union playing Pirates at the North Ground and University A facing Harbour at Watson Park.

Kaikorai 11 (Matt Direen try; Cam Rutherford 2 penalty goals), Taieri 10 (Jason Stewart try; Hayden Parker conversion, penalty goal). Halftime: 3-all.

Dunedin 18 (Shaan Davis, Simon Luke tries; Robbie Smith conversion, 2 penalty goals), Zingari-Richmond 3 (Johnny Noakes penalty goal). Halftime: Dunedin 3-0.
