Rugby: Otago Country finishes with a flurry

Otago Country finished its season on a high with a gutsy 15-10 win over Southland Country at Nightcaps on Saturday.

The win followed an impressive 37-18 win over Canterbury Country at Cromwell last weekend.

The task was always going to be tougher against South-land Country, which was fresh off an excellent win over Southland Metro.

Otago Country built a 10-7 halftime lead thanks to a converted try by Kaikorai winger Will Scorgie and a penalty to Alexandra five-eighth Mike Paulin.

It was 10-10 with 15 minutes left to play when halfback Josh Botting scored what would prove to be the match-winning try. Southland Country had one final flurry with the ball in a frantic last few minutes but the visiting side's defence proved solid.

Otago Country finished the season with two wins from five matches, a big effort considering it lost all its fixtures in 2012.

The Otago Colts continued their fine run with a 25-20 win over Canterbury Metropolitan at the University Oval on Saturday.

Aleki Morris scored two tries for Otago, and Hadleigh May and Alex Fitzgerald also crossed the line.

Otago Metropolitan beat Otago Country 28-19 in an under-16 representative match at the University Oval.

Kabe Calder, Tokerau Joseph, Jayden Willcock and Rewi Pomare scored tries for the Metro side and Alex Frood (three) and Josh Buchan kicked conversions. Impressive hooker Max Pennell scored two tries for Country.
