Rugby: Rugby first love for coach who sounds like a cricketer

Rahul Das.
Rahul Das.
Rahul Das is more than the cheerful chap in the bright teal-blue tie with the big personality and the very cricket-sounding name.

He is also a fourth-year medical student who somehow finds the time during his busy days to coach rugby.

And the 30-year-old transplanted Aucklander is pretty useful, too.

He guided University A to its first title since 2010 this season.

That effort was all the more impressive considering he is a rookie at premier level.

Midway through the campaign, his team also looked like it would miss out on a place in the semifinals.

But, having made the cut, it beat Harbour 35-33 in its semifinal and then dispatched Taieri 31-15 in the final.

''It actually took a while to sink in,'' Das said.

''After the final whistle I sat in the corner of the shed for a while to take it in and enjoy the moment.

''That excitement is still there. The team has such great potential ... and it will be nice to see if we can carry on [next year].''

Das, who was born in Auckland and is of Fijian Indian descent, might have a name you would expect to see opening the batting, but rugby has always been his first love.

''I'm not sure how I got into rugby. I've just always followed the All Blacks, I guess.''

He played rugby at school and some social club rugby when he shifted to Dunedin as an 18-year-old to attend university.

But he gave up playing in his early 20s, after a run of injuries.

He stayed involved in the sport through coaching, getting his start with the University women's team.

He then coached the colts side for three years and last winter joined the premier coaching staff.

He took over the reins this season.

Fitting the game into his busy life is a juggling act but easy when you have a passion for the sport, he said.

''There are definitely some long hours. But you can't have too much of one thing in your life, so I guess rugby gives me some of that balance.

''I get to do something that I really enjoy but also get to work with some really cool people.''

The bright teal-blue tie Das wears on game day is standard University kit but seems to suit his demeanour.

He was named personality of the year at the Dunedin club rugby awards earlier this week.
