Thomas (TJ) Perenara has the genes and seems destined for a career in international rugby.

The New Zealand Secondary Schools captain will play a key role in the test against Australia at Littlebourne today.

He is halfback and the goal-kicker.

"We can beat Australia if we play together as a team, keep our structure and everyone does their own job," he said.

"It would mean everything to me to beat the Aussies again. It is the ultimate to beat Australia."

Perenara (18), a pupil at Mana College in Wellington, is one of the four survivors from the team that beat Australia 28-24 at Brisbane last year.

His parents, Fiona and Thomas, both represented New Zealand at softball.

His aunt, uncle and grandmother also played for the national team.

Cousin Henry Perenara played rugby league for the Kiwis and Marcus, another cousin, played professional league for the Paramatta Eels.

Perenara has played for the New Zealand under-15 and under-17 softball teams but has turned his energies to rugby instead of league.

"League is not that important in Wellington," he said.

"Rugby is dominant."

He gained valuable experience this year when he played premier rugby in Wellington for Northern United.

Perenara has modelled his play on that of former Wallaby captain George Gregan and has adopted aspects from All Black Piri Weepu and Wallaby Will Genia into his own game.

"My ultimate dream is to become an All Black," he said.
