Rugby: Southern and Dunedin to square off

Southern and Dunedin will fight out the final of the Dunedin Speight's championship final at Carisbrook next Saturday.

Southern finished in style by scoring a last second try that swept 75m before halfback Joe Burford touched down to give Southern a last gasp 20-19 win over Alhambra-Union.

Southern trailed at the break but put its game together in the second spell with the forwards driving powerfully up the centre.

A key to Southern's win was its powerful front row of Scott Herriot, Jed Vercoe and Warren Moffat that pushed Alhambra-Union back in the scrum throughout the game.

Southern showed more enterprise and scored three tries to the one try by Alhambra-Union.

It was only the accurate goal kicking of fullback Peter Breen that kept Alhambra-Union in the game.

The second semi-final was more one-sided with Dunedin scoring two tries as it outplayed Pirates 21-7.

The loose trio of Scott McKee, Jon Crossan and Tim Fraser were dominant at the breakdown and their strong tackling shut down the Pirates backs.

Fullback Smith was the best of the Dunedin backs and he kicked four goals to score 11 of Dunedin's points. He was also dangerous on the counter-attack.

University A scored seven tries to outclass Harbour in the battle for fifth and sixth spot in the championship. Wing Hamish Johnstone scored three tries.

Zingari-Richmond was the only side to remain unbeaten when it beat Kaikorai 20-7 in the Countrywide competition.

Glenn Dickson (Pirates) leads the individual points scoring with 117 points and is followed by Chris Noakes (University A) 100, Peter Breen (Alhambra-Union) 111, Cam Rutherford (Kaikorai) 80, Jonnie Hughes (Harbour) 69, Michael Witt (Taieri) 65, Luke Reihana (Alhambra-Union), Joe Burford (Southern) 60.

Dynamic wing Karne Hesketh (Alhambra-Union) has scored the most tries with 12 and is followed by Siaosi Folau (Harbour) 10, Hamish Johnstone (University A) nine, Tumua Ioane (Dunedin) and Marshall Suckling (Pirates) eight, David Thompson (University A), Wayne Gibson (Alhambra-Union) seven
