Backing up from its biggest game of the season, Waitaki Boys' High School thrashed King's High School 64-32 in an Otago premier schools game on Saturday.
The healthy win in Oamaru has virtually secured WBHS a home semifinal and it came a day after its 19-8 win against St Kevin's College.
Waitaki coach Wayne Kinzett said the traditional interschool match against St Kevin's was a taxing game and to back up as well as they did was a superb effort, both physically and mentally.
"It is a big game mentally for us and it drains a lot out of us,'' Kinzett said.
"I was extremely proud of them. It was quite a big thing.''
The match against St Kevin's was played in the mud but the surface for the King's match was dry and Waitaki ran in 10 tries.
It led 38-7 at the break but understandably faded a little in the second spell.
"To be honest, towards the end of the game, I could just see the boys were running out of steam and just sort of hanging on.''
Kinzett was reluctant to single out too many players because he felt the entire side had played well. But vice-captain Daniel Halaholo had a superb game.
He started at fullback and shifted to first five-eighth about 30 minutes into the game and did a marvellous job directing the team, Kinzett said.
South Otago High School secured an important win against Otago Boys' High School 2nd XV, winning 29-15 at Littlebourne.
South Otago led 13-5 at halftime.
A good team effort saw the side home.
A few players back from injury helped the side.
John McGlashan College kept its perfect record with a 89-5 shellacking of Dunstan High School.
The loss has ended Dunstan's playoff hopes.
In the bottom six, Kavanagh College beat Mt Aspiring College 28-5 and Taieri College beat South Otago High School 2nd XV 51-12.
St Kevin's match against OBHS 3rd XV was deferred.
