Waldrom broke three bones in his back in a ruck collision during the 14-10 loss at Hamilton, ending any hope of All Blacks selection for next month's home tests and the Tri-Nations.
The Taranaki 28-year-old made his international debut last November during in the All Blacks' year-ending tour, playing against Munster in Limerick.
Some solid form during the Super 14 presented him as a possible backup to All Blacks captain and openside Richie McCaw when coach Graham Henry names his squad on Sunday.
A disappointed Waldrom said he had his heart set on retaining his place.
"I'm on the back foot at the moment," he told Radio Sport.
"I certainly would have liked to get a cap but unfortunately it puts me on the sideline and gives someone else a chance."
Henry has indicated he wants two specialist openside flankers in his squad, with Chiefs No 7 Tanerau Latimer now the possible front runner for a role behind McCaw.
