Weepu, who has had an up and down year, with form issues and concerns over his physical conditioning, comes into the side in place of Highlander Aaron Smith, who moves to the bench after starting the first six tests of the season.
Smith struggled somewhat last Saturday in the wind and rain at Wellington, failing to stamp his authority on the game, while Weepu lifted the side when he came on in the second half.
But under the roof with a surface assured to be hard and fast, not picking the speedy Smith is something of a surprise from All Black coach Steve Hansen.
The All Blacks would look to move the ball around the park and Smith's game would be best suited to that style of game.
But Weepu gets his chance and has benefited from being in the All Black camp.
In other changes from the team which started against the Pumas last weekend, Liam Messam takes the place of Victor Vito on the blindside flank.
Veteran hooker Andrew Hore gets his first start since the series against Ireland, swapping places with Keven Mealamu.
In the second row, lock Sam Whitelock, who was dropped last week, comes back into the side with Brodie Retallick going to the bench.
On the bench, Tamati Ellison is sighted, coming into the squad in place of home town boy Ben Smith.
Smith has impressed in the black jersey when he has come off the pine so far this season but Ellison is a quality player, who will make the most of his chance.
Messam coming back into the squad was a no-brainer after he made a big impact when replacing Vito in Wellington last Saturday.
Again there is no place in the squad for Otago loose forward Adam Thomson, and his chances of getting anywhere near the pitch squad for the final two games in the Rugby Championships look remote.
Hansen said the side was excited to be playing its first test under the roof at the stadium.
"They [Springboks] are an opponent that we have immense respect for. They are our traditional foe and there is great history between our two countries. It's going to be a huge test match. It is also the first All Blacks test in Dunedin's indoor stadium, which is exciting for the team," he said.
The All Blacks have won their first three games in the Rugby Championship and another win on Saturday should give them an almost an uncatchable lead in the competition.
The Springboks will arrive in Dunedin this morning and will have their one and only run at the stadium tomorrow afternoon.
