Strath Taieri stalwart up for NZR award

Jodi Taylor has been recognised for her countless hours behind the scenes keeping things ticking over.

The Strath Taieri Rugby Club stalwart is a finalist for volunteer of the year at the New Zealand Rugby Awards.

Taylor has been nominated alongside Stacey Kobus (Cambridge Junior Rugby) and Glen Devenie (Auckland Rugby Referees).

NZR yesterday announced the community and domestic rugby finalists who will be celebrated at the awards night on December 11.

Highlanders halfback Folau Fakatava is up for NPC player of the year following a big season for Hawke’s Bay. He is nominated alongside Taranaki first five Josh Jacomb, who will join Fakatava at the Highlanders from 2027, and Canterbury lock Sam Darry.

Grace Houpapa-Barrett (Waikato), Taufa Bason (Auckland) and Holly Williams (North Harbour) are up for Farah Palmer Cup player of the year.

It is easy to feel the Otago Spirit have been hard done by in that area, considering they ran away unbeaten through the Championship in which North Harbour play.

Meads Cup champion Declan McCormack (Mid Canterbury) is nominated for Heartland player of the year, alongside Sam Walton-Sexton (Wairarapa Bush) and Keanu Taumata (Poverty Bay).

Club of the year is always a hotly contested award. Rangataua Sports and Cultural Club, Waimate Rugby Football Club and Hunterville Rugby Football Club will fight for the honour this year.

Cian Edward Byrne-Hansen (Manurewa Intermediate, Counties Manukau), Sosoli Talawadua (Whanganui Rugby) and Peter Hastings (Bay of Plenty Referees) are finalists for the Te Hāpai Community Impact Award.

The award recognises people who have made an impact on various areas of the sport including participation, diversity, women’s rugby and player welfare.

The finalists for other categories — including Super Rugby, national coaches and international honours — will be announced on November 28.
